Till the discovery of oil, the people in the gulf region and particularly in the UAE were much dependent on imported food and the local food production was not only strenuous but also had to suffer from wide climatic variations. Yet, trade and commerce flourished and traders from distant lands brought in the best goods and brought back the costly items from the gulf to their respective countries.
